The Biblical Definition Of A Hero
Today, a hero is someone who champions the cause of others. We may even use the word to describe someone because of what they have accomplished. A person who is courageous or is thought to have a noble character may be called a hero.
In Genesis 10:8-9, we read these words,
And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord.
Nimrod, who lived in the time after the Great Flood, was the first person who was referred to as a mighty man in the Bible.
The Hebrew word translated as mighty is gibbôwr or gibbôr . Gibbôr can also be translated as powerful, warrior, tyrant, champion, chief, excel, giant, man, mighty , strong , or valiant man. And yes, the word tyrant is an option for the translation. As we will see in the verse below, the word tyrant makes perfect sense:
Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.
If you had asked the Philistines to make a list of the heroes in the Bible, Im sure Goliath would have been among the numbers. On the other hand, the Israelites would definitely nominate David as their hero. But with such disparate choices, who should we truly consider a hero?

The sexual-ethical structures of Roman society were built on status, and sexual modesty and shame meant something different for men than it did for women, and for the well-born than it did for the poor, and for the free citizen than it did for the slave.:7 In the Roman Empire, shame was a social concept that was always mediated by gender and status. Classics Professor Rebecca Langlands explains: “It was not enough that a wife merely regulate her sexual behavior in the accepted ways it was required that her virtue in this area be conspicuous.”:10,38 Younger says men, on the other hand, were allowed live-in mistresses called pallake. Roman society did not believe slaves had an inner ethical life or any sense of shame, since they had no status, therefore concepts of sexual morality were not applicable to slaves.:8486,88 Langlands points out this value system permitted Roman society to find both a husband’s control of a wife’s sexual behavior a matter of intense importance, and at the same time, see the husband’s sex with young slave boys as of little concern.:12,20

Rebekah was barren when she married Isaac and unable to give birth until Isaac prayed for her. When she delivered twins, Rebekah favored Jacob, the younger, over Esau, the first-born.
Through an elaborate trick, Rebekah helped influence the dying Isaac into giving his blessing to Jacob instead of Esau. Like Sarah, her action led to division. Even though Rebekah was a loyal wife and loving mother, her favoritism created problems. Thankfully, God can take our mistakes and make good come from them.

Rahab is one of the most unique and intriguing women in the Bible. A prostitute by trade, she lived in the city of Jericho during the time of the Israelite conquest.
