Although the Patagonia Better Sweater’s dense fabric makes it harder to layer, this feature does increase the amount of wind protection the fleece provides. Like most of the fleeces we reviewed, we still wouldn’t call it wind-resistant, but it does provide a little relief on gusty days. This fleece is not water-resistant.

My friends had talked me into the North Face Endurance Run, a 50K trail race in the Muir woods north of San Francisco. When I travel, I try to pack as minimally as possible, selecting outfits that can be reused in multiple ways. I had been wearing the Better Sweater Jacket on my way to and from work, but I was excited test its mettle in the colder climates of the Bay Area. When it comes to packing for trips or preparing to be out on the town for a while, less is more. When I arrived at Union Square, the air was chilly, but with the Better Sweater on I was still quite warm. As the sun set we went to dinner I walked right to the restaurant and slipped into a table. Not having to go through the process of changing or adding another layer makes basic daily tasks, like eating out, super simple.
Then theres the fabric: Patagonias Better Sweater Jacket is made up of bulk free knitted polyester fleece. Its in between midweight and heavyweight at 283 grams per square meter , and somehow sheds tons of bulk while retaining warmth.
So knitted.
A lot of other fleece jackets feel big and bulky, or are too lightweight to keep you warm. Its hard to find one that does both, but the Better Sweater manages in a city setting. It kept off most of the evenings chill just over a t-shirt. Or, if youre in much colder areas , its a solid midlayer to place between a long sleeve base and a waterproof shell.

Build Quality And Durability
Pilling is an inevitability with a fleece design, and its particularly true with the knit Better Sweater. To be clear, the entire jacket has a high-quality look and feel to it , but after a few months of pretty consistent useincluding a number of days worn under my ski jacketa few areas are starting to pill up. The good news is that maintenance is fairly easy with a sweater stone , and the rest of the jacket is holding up nicely. I havent gotten any tears, the zippers are still operating smoothly, and the seams look like new. All told, fleece cant match the simplicity of a synthetic or down piece in terms of upkeep, but if youre willing to put in a little effort, the Better Sweater can be a long-lasting design.

What We Like
