Prayer Points On The Woman With The Issue Of Blood

Jesus Heals a Woman of Faith

Trusting God is simple yet it is so difficult a lot of the times. But hey, if life isnt easy, then why would our faith journey be? Thats why we have to stay on our knees. As you consider the story of the bleeding women, pray for:

  • Courage to take godly steps of faith
  • Strength to push through difficult situations to access a miracle
  • Knowledge of things that might be standing between you and your faith in God like erroneous, superstitious beliefs
  • Strength to give God your complete attention just as He gives his complete attention
  • Daily peace and assurance of your personal salvation in Jesus.

Gods Attention To Your Faith Is Not Divided

The woman with the issue of blood teaches us that when God gives us His attention, he is never multitasking.

A faith as deep and unwavering as this womans not only earns Gods attention but it also secures His undivided attention. After the woman identified herself, Jesus zoomed in on her.

Jesus listened intently as she told her story. He listened as she described the shameful, disgraceful burden she had held for 12 years, the scorn she had suffered, the loneliness she had been bearing and the desperation she felt.

Despite the crowd, it seemed that no one else existed in those moments. There is no detail about how long it took for her to tell all that she had experienced. But it did not matter.

Jesus did not hurry her along although a little girl was on the brink of death. Its not that he cared less about this little girl. Jesus did not need to hurry. He has life and death in his hands.

At this moment, his daughter needed him. He was fully present for her.

Luke : 4348 1890 Darby Bible

43 And a woman who had a flux of blood since twelve years, who, having spent all her living on physicians, could not be cured by any one, 44 coming up behind, touched the hem of his garment, and immediately her flux of blood stopped. 45 And Jesus said, Who has touched me? But all denying, Peter and those with him said, Master, the crowds close thee in and press upon thee, and sayest thou, Who has touched me? 46 And Jesus said, Some one has touched me, for I have known that power has gone out from me.47 And the woman, seeing that she was not hid, came trembling, and falling down before him declared before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was immediately healed. 48 And he said to her, Be of good courage, daughter thy faith has healed thee go in peace.

The Woman With The Issue Of Blood

Read Mark 5:25-34

This miracle took place the same time as the raising of the daughter of Jairus. Three of the Gospels give us the two miracles together. The daughter of Jairus was twelve years old, and that is exactly how long this woman had suffered. The daughter was at the point of death, and the woman was not far behind. She could have taken courage from the fact that Jesus was going with Jairus as for Jairus, he could have taken encouragement from the fact that Jesus stopped on the way and gave someone else a complete healing. We dont know if Jairus and the woman ever reflected on it later, but the Lord often brings people together and works so that they can take encouragement from what the Lord is doing for one another.

Meanwhile, there are many differences between Jairus and this woman. Jairus was chief of the synagogue, a public figure in his town. He walked up to Jesus and gave an eloquent request My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed: and she shall live . This woman, on the other hand, has no name. Considered unclean, she came from behind to reach out and press the hem of Christs garment and then tried to steal away quietly. Though they were so different and came so differently, Christs grace acted powerfully for both of them as a testimony to what His grace can do for all kinds and all sorts.

True Faith Arrests Gods Attention

Have you wondered, like the disciples, how in the world Jesus knew that the woman with the issue of blood touched him?

When Jesus asked Who touched me?, the disciples thought that this was a ridiculous question. Afterall, he was in a crowd. Everybody was touching him. In fact, the word that describes the crowd really means that Jesus was being suffocated.

As he walked, he could hardly breathe because they were pressing so close to him. How then did he discern this particular touch?

Lets do a brief word study.

The word touch comes from the root word hapto which means to fasten to or to cling to. When Jesus asked Who touched me? he was not referring to the act of someone putting their hand on him. In fact, the story did not even say she touched Jesus. Actually, she only touched his clothes. Yet Jesus asked Who touched me?

What Jesus really asked was Who clung to me with their whole being in unwavering faith? You see, this woman was in a desperate situation. And this was her absolute last option and opportunity to escape her situation. So of course she clung to God in faith.

Many people in the crowd put their hands on Jesus but this bleeding woman was the only one who truly touched Jesus. Her faith was so powerful that it reached God more deeply than anyone else in that crowd.

Jesus did say he knew that someone touched him because power had gone out from him. The faith in her connected with the Heavenly Power that cannot but honor authentic faith.

Woman With The Issue Of Blood In The Bible

We find her story in . She had been bleeding for 12 years. According to Jewish law, if she was bleeding, she was unclean. Anything or anyone she touched was unclean. She could not take part in any worship in the synagogue or interact with her family or friends. She felt ostracized and was shut off from society.

The woman did, however, believe in the healing power of Jesus. She believed if she could secretly touch the hem of His cloak, He would heal her. She was desperate to be healed physically and from her loneliness and sought Jesus.

As she discreetly touches His cloak, she is healed. Her faith healed her from all her suffering.

You Must Want It Enough You’ll Pay The Price

On some level, we all wish for God to intervene in our lives in any number of areas. However, there is a difference between wishing God would intervene and wanting God to intervene. Wanting is far deeper it’s something that requires a much greater personal investment. Simply put, it’s the spiritual price you are willing to pay for results.

The disciples once asked Jesus why they couldnt cast a demon out of a child and Jesus said, this kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting . Translation: you must pay the price required for the thing you want.

We see another example of this principle with the story of the rich young ruler who was very rich, but who apparently felt empty or incomplete . He came to Jesus and asked Him, in essence, How can I get rid of this emptiness inside?

How can I stop this emptiness…this bleeding of my heart?

And what was His response? Jesus said, Go, and sell everything you have and give it to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven. Translation: you must pay the price required for the peace you desire.

The woman with the issue of blood proved she wanted to be healed. She was willing to spend every dime she had. She was willing to risk her life moving through a packed crowd. She was willing to defy every obstacle in order to stop the bleeding.

What is her lesson to us? Youve got to want it bad enough you’ll pay the price required.

If You Fail Try Again

Perhaps one of the most significant lessons we can learn from the woman with the issue of blood is to try again if we fail. The writers of Matthew, Mark, and Luke found it important to write that she was suffering from her bleeding for twelve years!

Although she would spend money over and over but not get better, she kept trying. When she heard about Jesus, it comes as no surprise that she tries again. Her initial failed attempts did not discourage her and this time she got what she wanted.

Just like the woman with the issue of blood tried again despite her many failed attempts, we should try again when we fail. A failure doesnt mean the thing we want isnt possible or Gods will. It could mean that we are going about it the wrong way, bad timing, or one of the many potential factors out of our control. We just have to keep the faith and try again.

What Can We Learn From The Woman With The Issue Of Blood

The woman with the issue of blood is mentioned in three of the gospelsMark, Luke, and Matthew.

is the longest passage about this woman. Let’s first read her story in the Bible:

A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding. She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse. She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. For she thought to herself, If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed. Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition.

Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, Who touched my robe?

His disciples said to him, Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, Who touched me?

But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. And he said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.

Luke 8:43-48 accounts for the same story but adds something notable about this woman.

Matthew 9:20-22 is the shortest account of the woman with the issue of blodd.
