Women’s Anacapa Low Gore-tex

What Other Hiking Boots Should You Consider

Hoka One One Anacapa Low GORE-TEX® SKU: 9514789

The primary features that make this boot stand out are its light weight and breathable upper. If you want to minimize ounces on your feet, we also recommend the Speedgoat Mid 2 GTX, which we found to be more comfortable than the Anacapa Mid GTX. The Salomon X Ultra Mid 4 Gore-Tex is also lightweight and provides additional stability.

Hiking Boot Fit And Feel

Pulling on the Anacapas, I have to say these fit like a glove or a sock, to be more precise. I have to give a huge nod to the Achilles-cradling pull-tab integrated into the sock liner it really works! Having this one feature gives you an almost custom fit and allows the boot to move with you.

This gave me extra assurance when maneuvering through soft terrain, rocks, and anything slippery. That level of ankle support and confidence in a pair of low-cut boots is amazing. See the mens mid boots at REI.

My partner had a pair of the womens mid version and said she never felt more locked into a boot before, especially one this light. My low versions came in at 14 ounces and her mids came in at 13.5 ounces.

The midsole on these is definitely a bit more firm, more what youd expect from a traditional hiking boot. Unlike the uber cushiness of the Kaha or even the Speedgoat , this midsole felt a lot like the Toa.

While still very responsive and springy, I felt like I could stomp through the ground rather than bounce away from it. It was actually a very reassuring feeling, especially when doing anything more than trail running. Hauling a pack over longer distances definitely benefits from the extra rigidity the Anacapa provides.

Should You Buy The Hoka Anacapa Low Gtx

If you have a narrow foot and plantar fasciitis, the uniquely engineered Anacapa Low GTX should be on your shortlist. But it is unlikely to serve your needs if you have an average to wider foot or need sturdy arch support. And given this shoe is at the higher end of the price spectrum, other more affordable, accommodating, and versatile options are available.

Toe And Ankle Protection

In the bid to save weight, Hoka did make some light concessions in terms of protection with the Anacapa Mid. As I mentioned above, theres plenty of cushioning around the ankles, which is great for sliding in between rocks, but the collar drops pretty aggressively at the back and leaves a portion of your heel exposed to scrapes. Additionally, while there is a toe cap on the boot and a piece of rubber covering the middle, its not the kind of burly wraparound design thats common on hiking footwear. As a result, I felt more of the impact when I inevitably kicked a rock or two on the trail. That said, the reinforced material at the toe did keep it from being any worse than it wouldve been with a pair of standard trail runners.

Hoka One One Anacapa Low Review: Comfort And Performance

Hoka Anacapa Low GORE

The sole unit is the first thing youll notice in the performance department, for several reasons. While the 6mm heel-toe drop isnt particularly extreme, and contributes to a surprisingly neutral foot position, theres plenty of unusual geometry here. Most obviously the heel unit far less aggressive than the completely over-the-top Hoka One One Ten Nine Hike but still with a significant overhang that initially forces the wearer to tread with care on rocky downhill sections, stairs and when driving.

However, on the open trail the Hoka One One Anacapa Low Gore-Tex hiking shoe delivers the flipside of this deep sole unit a super-plush, deadly comfortable ride. Coupled with the aggressive tread pattern its immediately easy to believe in these shoes, and trust them to keep you trekkin all day long. The upper nubuck is immediately flexible straight out of the box, and the polyester toe section offers no resistance at all, making normal walking totally effortless.

Another obvious feature is the heel upper, equipped with an unusual additional heel insert, like a high-end mountaineering boot. While it might look a little odd, this insert makes for a much more comfortable walking experience, locking the heel firmly into place underneath it, cushioning the Achilles, as well as spreading long-term wear from any remaining minimal heel lift. It also positions the fabric pull-on loop beautifully to the hand – an essential element in donning these in a hurry.

Our Analysis And Test Results

With some novel hiking boot technologies like the high rocker of a sneaker and a tab at the back for Achilles support, the Anacapa is certainly trying to blur the line between lightweight shoes and traditional boots. The upper is a combination of nubuck leather and recycled polyester textile that makes for a blend of durability and breathability. Taking these out on trail, their performance matched their design.

The Hoka Hiker Youve Been Waiting For: Anacapa Review

May 7, 2021 | By Mike Brown

If youre at all familiar with HOKAs claim to fame, you know its all in the sole. They have perfected the depth and responsiveness of their cushioned midsole to cater to the adventurous and casual alike.

Now with a battle-tested formula in hand, HOKA has been in the lab crafting the perfect hiking boot. After a few iterations with the Toa, Kaha, and the recent TenNine, the brands next official boot has hit the horizon.

The HOKA Anacapa targets a more versatile audience that gets after various distance hikes in all weather. The Anacapa also hits a sustainability mark for HOKA, with Leather Working Group-certified leather, recycled polyester, and 50% soy-based sock liner.

In short: I received a pair of the low version to put to the test and instantly fell in love with all the checkboxes that this all-in-one boot ticked off. The Anacapa offers up a stout, form-fitting hiker that fits the bill as both a weekend hiker and even an all-out backpacking boot if you so wish.

The Bottom Line: Hoka One One Ancapa Mid Gtx

Hoka One One Anacapa Low GORE-TEX® SKU: 9514693

Hoka One One made a great day hiking shoe with the Anacapa Mid GTX. A combination of light, durable, and sleek, it checks a lot of boxes required for a fun day in the mountains. The boots are also waterproof and secure . This is a great shoe if youll be logging lots of mileage either on mellow terrain or without a pack. If youre looking for a great day hiker and want something with the inherent benefits of a running shoe, the Anacapa might be the one for you. But if big days with a pack is what you have slated, I would pass on these ones in favor of a more backpacking focused hiking boot.

  • Shock absorbent soles to help relieve pain

Other Versions Of The Hoka One One Anacapa

Hoka Anacapa Low GORE

We brought the mens Anacapa Mid GTX to Colorado for testing, and the boot is also offered in a nearly identical womens version. The womens Anacapa Mid GTX costs the same at $180 but checks in a little lighter , is offered in different colorways, and has a slightly lower-volume fit. Rounding out the collection, Hoka offers a low-top Gore-Tex version for both men and women that retails for $165. As I mentioned above, there are currently no non-waterproof options in the lineup, and I would love to see a better-breathing, non-GTX variation of either model at some point.

Build Quality And Durability

Similar to my experiences with the boots traction, durability is a bit of a mixed bag with the Hoka Anacapa Mid GTX. On the positive side, its clearly well made, the sections of leather add a nice dose of toughness, and you get quality features like the Vibram Megagrip rubber, Gore-Tex liner, and sturdy plastic eyelets for the laces. And at $180, the Anacapa strikes me as a solid all-around value considering the premium build.

The main knock I have is related to those exposed sections of blown rubber on the bottom of the sole. Not only did they have a negative impact on grip when scrambling, but the pads are already showing significant signs of wear. The foam-like material has scrapes and tears throughout, and it will clearly be something that continues to break down over time. Its true the boot will likely still have an average lifespanthat middle section of rubber will probably just go flat after a whilebut I think Hoka couldve done a better job maximizing durability by giving the Anacapa a full rubber outsole .

Hoka One One Anacapa Low GTX Unboxing & First Impressions

This model has the heart of a hiking shoe in the body of a boot. It’s lightweight with a combination of a thick outsole and thinner running-shoe-like material in the upper. We appreciate Hoka’s innovative approach to footwear, but this particular model doesn’t differentiate itself enough from other hiking boots that provide more stability, traction, comfort, and waterproofness which is primarily why hikers look to boots in the first place. All things considered, this is a nice option, but we would look elsewhere first before choosing this model.

A Great Day Hiker For Mellow Terrain

This shoe is lightweight, and the thoughtfulness put into making a good day hiker is evident. It doesnt seem to be fully a runner, with the super supportive ankle and the lacing design. But the good parts about sneakers the lightness, the flexibility, the breathability its all there. I wore the Anacapas on a steep 5-mile hike and was impressed with the performance on both trail and sloppy snow.

The Anacapas material is clearly considered through a lens of sustainability, which I appreciated the attention to recycled materials and low impact. The leather is a waterproof nubuck, treated without the use of harmful PFCs . This leather is certified gold-standard by the Leather Working Group, a non-profit solely focused on environmental stewardship in the leather industry. Their ranking system is comprehensive, and awards different tanneries gold/silver/bronze in their environmental impacts. All this to say, Hoka paid attention to the details here. And the Gore-Tex footliner? Its 45% recycled content by weight and features 71% recycled material in face fabric according to HOKAs website.

The Good:

  • A sustainability focused shoe apparent throughout construction.
  • Impressive flexibility without compromising heavy duty traction.
  • Great waterproofness, and without scary PCFs!
  • Super light, with the HOKA classic comfort sole.
  • Stylish. Got marks of approval from my fashionable 16 year old brother.

The Bad:

Running brand Hoka One One has been aggressively growing their hiking footwear collection of late, and the new Anacapa Mid is arguably their best effort yet. This boot combines the smooth ride and excellent cushioning that the company is known for with over-the-ankle height and protection, great fit thats snug in the heel and decently roomy in the toe box, and reasonably light weight. We do have some durability concerns, including premature wear along parts of the outsole, and the thick cushioning gives it polarizing looks, but it’s overall a quality option for on-trail hikers that put a premium on comfort. Below we break down our experiences with the Anacapa Mid. To see how it stacks up to the competition, check out our article on the best hiking boots.
